Want To Bill Big? Choose Your Practice Area Wisely

Law360 (Link to Full Article) Young associates may end up at the bottom of the billing heap based on their choice of specialty, with average hourly billing rates for associates varying by nearly $200 per hour based on practice area at the largest law firms, according to a joint Law360 and BTI Consulting Group Inc. survey.

Associates at firms with at least 400 attorneys have billing rates that are on average 46 percent higher than firms with fewer than 150 attorneys, with some megafirm associates charging up to $650 per hour, according to BTI's Billing Rate Reference 2014 report, prepared in partnership with Law360. At the same time, associate billing rates at firms that are roughly the same size can vary by more than 50 percent depending on the associate's practice area.
